Electoral Register mess

I’m 26 and voted Fine Gael since I could vote. The last time I tried to vote, but couldn’t, because I had been taken off the register. Some of my friends experienced the same problem. Now my other friend who is Fianna Fail through and through was able to vote three times in different areas. My mother and father are dead ten years and are still on the register, yet I was taken off mysteriously. Can you please help clarify this. Richie in Cork.

Hi Richie.  I can’t comment on the multiple voting by one person accusation but I can say that there was a lot of confusion at the drafting of the last electoral register.  Some enumerators, I know, simply deleted people from the register if they couldn’t make contact with them.

Legally it is the duty of every voter to make sure that they are on the register and you can check by logging on to www.checktheregister.ie and see if your name is on it.  If not you can download a form for registration and this would certainly be important for next year’s local elections.  The expiry date for registration is 14th February 2009.
