Rights to keep overtime

I have been on overtime since 1997. If my employer wants to stop this overtime have I any rights?

This seems to be a very long time to be on overtime and I am wondering can this employee make the case that the overtime in fact is no longer overtime but is an integral part of his salary?

Overtime itself is a discretionary facility agreed between employer and employee and by its very nature is normally flexible in its hours, depending on demand in the business.

To this listener I would advise that he or she should sit down with an employment advisor – if in a union, with their union rep. - or contact the National Employment Rights Authority (NERA) at www.employmentrights.ie  or contact a specialist employment law Solicitor - but remember that in most sectors you cannot, by law, work more than 48 hours per week so any claim would be limited to that.
