Tax on internet earnings

I would like to know when I receive payment (either through Paypal or by cheque) for internet sales, do I declare my earnings in the same way as a self-employed person would to the Revenue for tax purposes. Diarmuid, Portlaoise.

Hi again, Diarmuid.

Good luck with venture.

The answer to your question is yes.  If you are resident in Ireland then you are earning your income in Ireland. Even though the money is coming from overseas you are taxable here.

Bear in mind that if you exceed a certain threshold of your turnover you may be liable for VAT so check this out with your accountant.

If you are selling works that may be tax exempt under the artists’ and authors’ exemption scheme then you should submit the work to the Revenue Commissioners as soon as possible and get their ruling on it.  Full details can be found on the Revenue website www.revenue.ie.

I should say that there is plenty of free business start-up help out there. Talk to your local Chamber of Commerce (better still – join at a modest fee which you’ll get back hundreds of times over in business) – www.chambers.ie or alternatively contact the County Enterprise Board – for Laois http://www.laoisenterprise.com/
